Here’s what changed my thinking: Coursera uses HeyGen to translate instructor-led courses, preserving the teacher’s voice, emotion, and lip sync in Spanish, French, German, and beyond. Students don’t want to read subtitles. They want to feel like someone is teaching them. When Coursera removed that barrier, watch time jumped 40%. Course completion rose 25%. We’re seeing the same pattern everywhere: - Komatsu, a 100-year-old equipment manufacturer with 65,000+ employees across 150+ countries, replaced training slides with computer voiceovers with AI avatar-led videos translated into 14 languages. 80-90% of viewers now watch the full video. Quiz scores went up. - Würth Group (88,000 employees, 80+ countries) cut video translation costs by 80% and now trains their global sales force on complex products without knowledge getting lost in translation. The insight across all of them: the biggest bottleneck in global learning was never the content. It was the format. Text doesn’t land the same as seeing someone speak to you in your language. Subtitles create distance. Traditional dubbing is expensive and slow. When you remove those barriers, people actually learn. Completion rates go up. Retention improves. L&D teams go from producing a handful of videos a quarter to scaling a full multilingual curriculum. This is one of the use cases I’m most excited about at HeyGen. The trigger: an unrelated change that pulled Flask into the workflow worker.

Suddenly the full import chain executed:
Workflow → PubSub → Stats → Metrics Context → Flask
Temporal sandbox said: absolutely not 💥 → instant crash.

Incident lasted ~1h, the lessons stick way longer:

My first major campaign at HeyGen *shattered new subscription records* and hit 2 million impressions in less than a week. That’s also how much time we had to bring it live. Here’s what happened: We were launching the new version Video Agent and I had a choice: make a standard product launch video, or try something HeyGen had never done before. I pitched a character. His name is Dave. Dave can parallel park on the first try. He makes a perfect omelet. But Dave cannot produce a video to save his life. The internal reaction? Skepticism. "This feels more like a Super Bowl ad than a product launch video." My response: Super Bowl ads are the most effective ads in the world at driving customers. The riskiest decision was the creative style. I drew inspiration from one of my favorite childhood animations—Wallace and Gromit by Aardman Animations. That claymation warmth, the dry humor, the lovable imperfection. I knew there was some risk of backlash. But for the most part, it struck the intended emotional chord with our users (and our colleagues). I wrote the script, creative directed, created the narrator voice, chose the channels, wrote every piece of copy, and owned the full GTM. Our Head of Content, Brandon Satterfield , and I spent multiple days and nights weeding through bad ideas to get to this good one. Nailing the creative vision of the visuals, music, and all of the editing, he was essential to bringing Dave to life. The results so far: → 2M+ impressions across social → 30% week-over-week increase in Video Agent usage by paid users → ~60% of new paid users now using Video Agent But the moment I knew it was working wasn’t a metric. It was watching the Twitter comments roll in: "I’m SO Dave." That’s when I knew we’d made something people saw themselves in. Dave was new creative territory for me and HeyGen. This was a unique project - the idea started with a question: could we use code-gen visuals (specifically Remotion) to create stylized templates that act as overlays for avatar videos? We did a ton of user research and found a clear gap - a lot of our mobile users were leaving the app just to add super basic finishing touches like captions or hooks before posting to social. That’s not a great experience.

Now if you’ve ever tried using Claude or other AI tools to code Remotion graphics you know the results can be pretty... finicky. So we took a completely different route - our incredible designer would create keyframe animations in Figma for caption animations, hook animations, etc. and we’d essentially build them backwards from there. Having that clear visual direction made it so much easier to control animation behaviors, consistent placement, all of it.

This is really just the beginning of this feature but I’m super excited about where we’re headed and how we’re approaching building out the tools our users are asking for.
